As a kid, sometimes our taste in movies was like a wild rollercoaster—up, down, and loop-de-loop! 🎢 We’d watch anything with wide-eyed wonder, even if it was objectively terrible. Here are a couple of movies that fit that nostalgic bill:
Super Mario Bros. (1993):
Back in the early '90s, this live-action adaptation of the beloved video game franchise seemed pretty awesome to young Mario fans. We got to see Mario and Luigi (played by Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo) in the flesh, and Dennis Hopper hammed it up as the villainous King Koopa.
But let’s face it: Super Mario Bros. was a rancid mess of a film. The dark, “gritty” visuals were entirely inappropriate for a Mario movie, and the script was mind-numbingly stupid. Plus, that hilariously bad sequel-bait ending? Yikes! As adults, we can now appreciate its terribleness, but as kids, it was like catnip to our little Mario-loving hearts 1.
Space Jam (1996):
A bizarre mashup of basketball and cartoons, Space Jam was pure cinematic magic for us as kids. Michael Jordan teaming up with the Looney Tunes to save the day? Iconic!
But let’s be real: The movie is far from a slam dunk. As adults, we notice the wonky plot, the odd mix of live-action and animation, and the sheer absurdity of it all. Yet, deep down, we still secretly root for the Tune Squad. Nostalgia goggles, anyone? 🏀🐰2.
So, whether it’s Goombas or animated basketball games, these movies hold a special place in our hearts—even if they’re objectively terrible by grown-up standards! 😄🎥
