Former Brazilian forward Robinho, accused of gang-raping a woman in Italy in 2013, will have to serve his sentence in his own country. The court in Brasilia, the capital of Brazil, gave this verdict yesterday. There was a vote on which country he should serve the sentence. 9 votes were in favor of the Italian court's penalty claim, 2 votes were in favor of Robinho.

According to the court's verdict, Robinho's sentence should begin immediately. 40-year-old Robinho also did not attend court yesterday on the day of the verdict. Robinho was represented in court by his lawyer Jose Alcmin. Alkamin told reporters that they will appeal the verdict and that he will do everything possible to keep his client (Robinio) out of jail.

The Italian court sentenced Robinho to 9 years in prison in 2017 after the rape charges were proven. However, even though Robinio left Italy before that, he appealed against the verdict in the court of Milan in 2020. He lost the appeal.

Then in 2022, Italy's highest court upheld his sentence and at the same time asked the Brazilian government to carry it out. Brazil's Superior Court of Justice (STJ) previously said it would review Robinho's punishment.

Italian lawyers also issued an international arrest warrant for Robinho. But the Brazilian government does not extradite a Brazilian citizen to foreign judicial authorities when he returns to his country after committing a crime abroad. So it was said by Italy that Robinho's punishment should be executed in Brazil . The final verdict came at last.

After 14 months on bail in a rape case, Robinio was accused of gang-raping an Albanian woman in a nightclub in Milan in 2013 while playing for Italian club AC Milan. The woman went to the night club to celebrate her 23rd birthday.

Although Robinio has claimed his innocence from the beginning. In a recent interview with the Brazilian television network TV Record, the 40-year-old former footballer said that everything with the woman was consensual. He also called Italy's judicial system 'racist'.
